Prime Minister Hun Sen remembers the hardships of the Khmer Rouge era when his grandson sent him a birthday photo.

Phnom Penh: The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, recalled the hardships that he and his wife, as well as their son, Hun Manet, faced under the Khmer Rouge regime on his grandson's birthday.

The Prime Minister wrote on his Facebook page that after seeing the photos and listening to the voice of his 20th grandson, who had sent him a voice message on the occasion of his birthday, it made him remember the birthday of his son, Hun Manet, who was born in 1977 under the Khmer Rouge regime.

He said: "When I woke up, I saw my 20th grandson sending me photos and voicemails. Today is grandson's birthday. Looking at the photos and listening to the voice messages reminded me of the year 1977 when his father was born with no father around, no food, only tears of the mother in the name of child Betray Angkar. When he met his father he called him ‘uncle’ for up to 2 months. It is your 4th birthday this year and we are in the stages of Covid-19, you are unable to visit your grandparents, but you are still in a better place than when your father was born in a wall less prison. I wish you happiness and prosperity.

After seeing the hardships and sufferings of the Cambodian people under the leadership of the Pol Pot genocide, on June 20, 1977, Prime Minister Hun Sen decided to leave his homeland, leaving his poor wife, who was pregnant, to seek help to liberate the country. And through that dangerous choice and tears he has brought happiness and prosperity to Cambodia to this day.
